Les Misérables

Les Misérables is one of the world’s longest-running musicals as well as being one of the most known winning over 70 awards since it was first released. It was originally composed in 1980  by French author Claude-Michel Schönberg and in 2010 played its ten-thousandth performance in London’s West End at the Queen’s Theatre. The story is based on the famous 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables, about the lives of various characters in the19th century France, most notably the prisoner Jean Valjean.  Les Misérables is one of the most popular and best-loved  musical, with more than 50 million tickets sold worldwide and is definitely worth catching if not done so already.

The Phantom of the Opera

Her Majesty’s Theatre, Haymarket, London, SW1Y 4QL

The Phantom of the Opera is one of the best known musical created by Andrew Lloyd Webber.  It is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux about life beneath the stage of the Paris Opera House.  The musical first opened in the West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988 and its known to be the longest-running musical on Broadway history as well as the second-longest-running West End musical.  The Phantom of the Opera was also played all over the world with performances in some 25 countries and 149 cities.  It sold more than 100 million tickets worldwide, making it one of the  highest-grossing entertainment event of all time (with over £3.5bn).  It was awarded many times over including with the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical.

Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers is a classic  musical written by Willy Russell, based on the 1844 novella The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas about a tale of twins who separated at birth grew up to become very different characters. The story is a contemporary nature vs. nurture plot, between twins with completely different backgrounds, one becoming an Oxbridge-graduated councillor and the other unemployed and in prison. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a tear in their friendship and leading to tragic consequences.

Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys is a famous jukebox and documentary-style musical with music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe and the book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice.  It is based on the lives of one of the most successful 1960s rock “n roll groups of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons Jersey Boys.  The musical started on Broadway in 2005, and has since had a North American National Tour, along with productions in the West End, Las Vegas, Chicago, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney and Philadelphia as well as winning four 2006 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Betty Blue Eyes is another brilliant musical playing at the Novello theatre in the heart of the West End.  It is a musical with music by George Stiles, lyrics by Anthony Drewe, and book by Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman.
