Mousetrap

Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap is famous for being the world longest initial run play in history, with over 24,000 performances. This murder mystery play was written by famous crime novelist Agatha Christie and first opened in the West End of London in 1952.  It has since been running continuously and became famous for its twist ending, which the audience is asked not to reveal at the end of every performance. The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is one of the best known musical created by Andrew Lloyd Webber.  It is based on the French novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux about life beneath the stage of the Paris Opera House.  The musical first opened in the West End in 1986, and on Broadway in 1988 and its known to be the longest-running musical on Broadway history as well as the second-longest-running West End musical.  The Phantom of the Opera was also played all over the world with performances in some 25 countries and 149 cities.  It sold more than 100 million tickets worldwide, making it one of the  highest-grossing entertainment event of all time (with over £3.5bn).  It was awarded many times over including with the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical.

The 39 Steps

Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers is a classic  musical written by Willy Russell, based on the 1844 novella The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas about a tale of twins who separated at birth grew up to become very different characters. The story is a contemporary nature vs. nurture plot, between twins with completely different backgrounds, one becoming an Oxbridge-graduated councillor and the other unemployed and in prison. They both fall in love with the same girl, causing a tear in their friendship and leading to tragic consequences.

The musical debuted in 1983 and was highly acclaimed winning  the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The current West End revival is one of the longest-running musical productions in history, opening in 1988 West End and still running today.  It is often  regarded as one of the all time great British musicals, touching various social issues of our time such as inequality and unemployment and should be recommended to everyone.

Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys is a famous jukebox and documentary-style musical with music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe and the book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice.  It is based on the lives of one of the most successful 1960s rock ‘n roll groups of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons Jersey Boys.  The musical started on Broadway in 2005, and has since had a North American National Tour, along with productions in the West End, Las Vegas, Chicago, Toronto, Melbourne, Sydney and Philadelphia as well as winning four 2006 Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Lion King

Billy Elliot

Billy Elliot is a great west end musical with music by Sir Elton John, and book and lyrics by Lee Hall, based on the 2000 successful hit film of the same name.  The story is set in the North East of the country where Billy Elliot a funny and heart-warming little boy celebrates his young boy’s dream and trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes.
The musical premiered in London’s West End in 2005 and was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, winning four including Best New Musical.
